Comic books had the potential to be the ultimate underground cultural movement, and instead, it's fizzled out, making bad movies and nerds nerdier.
It could have been chic. It could have been hip. Imagine an exclusive club, and the only way in was to frequent a direct market comic shop.
Now, comic characters are being released on the silverscreen in droves, most people grasping only a basic understanding of characters, and immediately branding the original fans, the Green Lantern t-shirt wearers as nerds or worse.
What has happened to out society?

Re: The Loss of a Culture
Wed, July 28, 2004 - 9:19 PMIt went "mainstream" in the worse way it possibly could. Publishers desperate with the decline/collapse of the market started licensing their popular titles out as quickly as they could to try to bring in additional revenue in order to avoid bankruptcy. -

Re: The Loss of a Culture
Fri, July 30, 2004 - 6:56 AMSo what can we do to restore respectability to the industry?
1. DON"T buy bad books. If there's a book you're picking up every month ot of habit, rather than interest (For instance, i've got the first 30 issues of the Avengers and Iron Man from after Heroes Reborn, and maybe only the first3 are actually valuable. I'll prbly never read them again, either) Cutting out the books that lack content will send a clear message to publishers: STOP FEEDING US CRAP
2. TALK. Don't be affraid to talk about comics, with your friends, family, in english class, in art class. Just try not to be offended if anyone makes fun of Aquaman.
3. BATHE. Every year I go to the Toronto ComicCon there a people who stink worse then the shit monster from Dogma. C'mon, guys! For christ sake! Basic hygene is ESSENTIAL! How hard is it to shower, atleast once every two days and put on some deodarant. -

Re: The Loss of a Culture
Mon, February 14, 2005 - 10:40 AMpeople who do not bathe have a low sense of self-esteme and may have also lost their sense of smell. Be nice to them and their self-esteme -- and bathing schedule -- may rise.
